What is Hate Crime?

The standard definition used by the police and criminal justice system in the United Kingdom is:

Any criminal offence which is perceived by the victim or any other person, to be motivated by a hostility or prejudice based on a person’s race or perceived race; religion or perceived religion; sexual orientation or perceived sexual orientation; disability or perceived disability and any crime motivated by a hostility or prejudice against a person who is transgender or perceived to be transgender.

Reporting Hate Crime

To contact your local police force in the United Kingdom:

  • in an emergency dial 999 (including when a crime is taking place);
  • for non-emergency calls you can contact your local police force by calling 101;
  • text SMS 999 (or 61016 for British Transport Police) if you cannot speak for any reason, or are in a situation where it’s dangerous to be obvious in calling for help
  • there are also useful hate crime reporting apps such as Report a Hate Crime - True Vision
