1. The copyright owner is normally the person who has taken the image; however, if you give someone your camera and ask them to take a photograph for you, you would normally retain the copyright.
    (If you are not the copyright owner it is common courtesy to give the photographer credit in these circumstances; this may be required as a condition of use.)

Example 1

You attend a public trans-pride march in a city centre. At the march, a speaker addresses the crowd. A friend takes photos of the speaker and the crowd as they speak. You later catch up with the speaker and use your phone to take a selfie with them.

You may write about the pride march, including giving details of the speaker and the speech's contents without seeking permission. You need permission from your friend to use their photographs, but you do not need permission from the people captured in the photos. However, you cannot write about your private conversation without the person's permission. You are the copyright owner for the selfie photograph, but you will need permission from the speaker to use the photo.

Example 2

You wish to write an article in response to perceived anti-transgender comments made by a well-known celebrity published in the media. You may write about the celebrity (including naming them if the name is in the public domain). You should reference your source(s), including referencing any direct quotes.

Example 3

You write an autobiographical piece. You wish to attach photos taken at a photo shoot. In this instance, you need permission from the photographer to use the images (although permission may be included as part of the photoshoot).
